Tom Vitanza
Architect (Historical) [Senior] Emeritus & Partner at National Park Service, Historic Preservation Training Center
Vitanza believes "the greenest building is one that is already built" (Carl Elefante) and sustainability is his work (also called preservation). He was introduced to working in the environment of the urban context in 4th year studio by VPI Architecture Professor Walter Butke, where they did a studio based in Baltimore. It was gritty and it was great. Over the years, he has learned that it is OK to build new when required as the demand for additional space increases. Some of his favorite NPS projects have been rehabilitating structures that were deemed too far gone by others and get them back into use.
