Future Students Frequently Asked Questions

Undergraduate admissions into the bachelor's programs do not require a portfolio.

Graduate admissions into the master's or PhD programs do require a portfolio.

Through the Industrial Design Program, students can sign up for the Industrial Design Minor or the Design + Technology + Creative Expression Pathways Minor. 

In the Landscape Architecture Program, students can sign up for a Minor in Landscape Architecture.

Inside Design is a one-week, hands-on summer program for high school students into the ways in which designers think and work. For young people considering a future in design, this program cracks open the excitement and opportunities of architecture and related design disciplines. No prior course or subject experience is necessary, just the initiative to break the bounds of conventional modes of thinking.

Every February, the School of Design and the School of Architecture offers the Annual Career Day and Design Expo, a unique event where students can connect with professionals and job opportunities in the fields of industrial design, interior design, and landscape architecture, and architecture. In preparation for this event, students can attend workshops and receive guidance, covering resume building, portfolio reviews, and interview preparation to help build your professional journey in the design industry.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) is an online guide created by the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides an easy-to-understand comparison of hundreds of jobs in the United States, such as Industrial Designers, Interior Designers, and Landscape Architects.

 

Each program in the School of Design have merit based awards chosen on an annual basis. Landscape Architecture has some need based scholarships.

School of Design welcomes transfer students to the Interior Design and Landscape Architecture programs.

Virginia Tech considers you to be a transfer applicant if you've attempted 12 or more credit hours at another college or university at any time following your high school graduation. If you're interested in completing your degree at Virginia Tech, make sure you're up to speed on requirements and policies for prospective transfer students.
